Earwig Outbreaks

Earwigs, scary looking little creatures with pincers, that seem to swarm our lawns and houses every summer...

Not native to North America, these European creatures started showing up through ports in the early 20th century, and have spread across the country. earwigs are actually quite harmless, and because they like to eat decomposing organic matter, like leaves and lawn waste, and they also like to eat small pests like aphids and mites, so in small numbers can be beneficial in the outdoors.

Earwigs like to hide in tight, dark places during the day, and can accidentally find their way into our homes and businesses this way. They prefer the outdoors, but once they are indoors are a bit scary when they suddenly show up in unexpected places.

When there is an Earwig outbreak, the best defense is to prevent any entry into your home, by sealing cracks and crevices with a silicone-based caulk, steel wool or a combination of both. Earwigs like damp shady spots, so also make sure piles of leaves, logs, and any other favorable hiding spot is kept away from yout building.
