Every Spring we get the same thing - swarms of Midges flying around West Michigan. In the right light you can see "clouds" of them swirling around the sky!
Every year they emerge form the lakes and streams around us to mate, and then drop their eggs back in the water, and then perish. There it takes a year for them to grow to be adults, and we see them again next Spring!
Midges are largely harmless, and usually only an issue for a few days. Stay out of their way, and marvel at the swirling clouds they form!
